10×12 Modern Work Shed – Part 1 – The Foundation

10x12 Modern Work Shed - Part 1 - The Foundation

See how we build the foundation for what will be our modern work shed. There was an 8 inch difference between the low and high elevations. We built a low block retaining wall and backfilled with gravel. From there everything was compacted, and capstone concrete blocks were set as a non load bearing border.

Decluttering Day 23 | The Potting Shed | The Garden Shed

Downsizing & Decluttering Vlog Day 23/30

Downsizing and decluttering now has a deadline as the house is sold and I’ll be moving in 7 weeks so April’s ‘Action Month’ and for 30 days I’m going to vlog my downsizing prep. There will be decluttering and decision making and the first stage of packing up. You’re my ‘accountability buddies’ to keep me focused and I’ll declutter an area (or at least part of one) every day so that in 30 days I’ll have broken this huge task down to a manageable size.

And this isn’t just for so those with empty nests because downsizing is increasingly popular with a wide range of demographics and for many different reasons from embracing minimalism and the tiny house movement to living near to work or the wide open spaces of a beach side cottage.

And here’s another great source for decluttering ideas over on the Clean My Space Channel: http://bit.ly/2gbAJnY

The SHED Project produces micro-homes inside vacant properties

The SHED Project produces micro-homes inside vacant properties

The SHED Project, an initiative that produces self-contained micro homes that can be installed in vacant spaces, features in the latest movie from our Dezeen x MINI Living video series.

Lowe Guardians finds empty properties such as warehouses, offices and abandoned buildings in London and utilises them as temporary affordable housing for young professionals, while additionally providing a service to developers who want to keep vacant properties occupied to provide security against squatters, vandals or deterioration.

Tim Lowe, the company’s founder, decided to collaborate with London-based Studio Bark to create the DIY housing scheme after witnessing the often squalid living conditions in vacant properties when living as a property guardian himself.

“The reality has always been that turning vast, open spaces into private rooms for guardians has always been both tricky and time consuming” says Lowe.

According to its creators, the SHED micro home has been designed to allow easy assembly in just one day using a mallet and a drill, and can also be disassembled, transported to another location and rebuilt.

In this the seventh and final video following pricklysauce.com build of, what I like to think of, as a bike wardrobe, I fill up my van and drive it all up to the clients garden near ‘The Smoke’.

My dog came along with me to keep me company and we woke the next morning to glorious weather for the first day of putting the shed back together again,

As the shed had been constructed as a flat pack, the main structure went back together really quickly,

For the first time the cladding was nailed onto the walls giving me the first glimpse of its finished state,

As the scaffold post extended slightly beyond the existing paving I dug out a hole and popped an old bucket into it and filled it up with concrete to set as a pad to securely fix the foot of the post.

Working into the evening I fixed the felt to the roof in case of rain.

A glass of wine beckoned…

The next morning feeling a little more refreshed I tackled the mighty door using a skateboard to easily move this heavy section around.

I fitted a heavy duty wheel on the end of the door to help support its weight and cut away some of the stone pavers to allow the door to smoothly open.

Then just a case of re-fitting the top triangle sections of the door and their pulley system, the shelves to the inside and the bike clamp,

The clients have previously bought one of my hangUp skate hooks and asked me to fit it inside the shed for their sons skateboard. You too can buy one from my website http://www.pricklysauce.com/

All that was left to do was to hang up the bikes, and they all fitted in nicely with room to spare.

All finished by mid afternoon leaving time to take my dog for a walk before the clients came home to enjoy their new Bike Wardrobe.

The bike Wardrobe achieved its aim of providing a shed that evokes a tradition clad and felt roof garden shed though with a quirkiness to it of the scaffolding poles that allow the bikes to be stored in a small space and slide out to be used. This ‘open’ area and the shelving/flip down tables allow for maintenance to easily be undertaken.

And it looks cool!

I so enjoyed designing and building this project and I hope you have enjoyed watching the process
